No Credit History? This Card Still Gets You Approved
If you’re building credit for the first time, most cards want to see a track record you don’t have yet.
The Discover it® Student Cash Back doesn’t require any prior credit score to apply.
Check before you apply, not after
You can see if you’re likely to qualify before submitting anything.
That pre-check uses a soft inquiry, so it won’t affect your credit score.
What this card actually costs
| Annual fee | $0 |
| Regular APR | 16.49% – 25.49% variable |
| Intro APR | 0% for 6 months on purchases |
| Credit score needed | None |
| Foreign transaction fee | $0 |
| Reports to bureaus | Equifax, Experian, TransUnion |
It earns 5% cash back in rotating categories each quarter (up to the quarterly limit), and 1% on everything else.
In your first year, Discover matches all the cash back you’ve earned, dollar for dollar.

|---|---|
| $100 on groceries | $5.00/month, $60/year |
| $50 on gas | $2.50/month, $30/year |
| $200 on everything else | $2.00/month, $24/year |
That’s about $114 in your first year. With the first-year match, it becomes around $228.
This is an estimate based on the categories and limits above, not a guaranteed amount. Actual rewards depend on your spending and which categories are active each quarter.

One rule to know before you apply
If you’re under 21, federal law requires proof of independent income, or a cosigner over 21.
Most issuers, including Discover, no longer accept cosigners.
So your own income is usually what decides approval. Leftover scholarship or grant money after tuition counts too.
Is this card actually right for you?
It’s a good fit if:
- You have no credit history yet.
- You want to build credit without an annual fee.
- You’d rather start simple than chase a complex rewards system.
It’s probably not the best fit if:
- You already have good credit and want higher, uncapped rewards. In that case, check the Capital One options on this page instead.
What this card builds toward
Every on-time payment gets reported to all three credit bureaus.
Your FICO score is built from these factors, in this order of weight:
| Factor | Weight in your score |
|---|---|
| Payment history | 35% |
| Credit utilization | 30% |
| Length of credit history | 15% |
| Credit mix | 10% |
| New credit inquiries | 10% |
Paying on time and keeping your balance low covers 65% of your score on its own. That history is what a landlord, a car lender, or your next credit card issuer will check later.
